Be Lipidwise
How diet and lipids shape humanity and hold the key to health.
Welcome to Homo op(t)imus, an independent publication and research collection designed to deliver articles centered around providing information and research to guide you on a journey to better health through increased understanding of lipids, nutrition and human health.
All information here is driven by an innate curiosity for how things work and how to use that information to grow and improve. I aim to bridge the gap between the raw data being collected and societal interpretation and awareness of those data.
At the moment, to me, that gap is most evident in our understanding of lipid biology and human health.
My goal here is to:
Bridge the gap between the raw data and clear, actionable understanding.
Provide analysis and updates on new research studies
Generate new data, analysis and research insights
Motivation and Purpose
It is more important than ever to think critically, from first principles and be able to question everything as new data is collected. That is a core tenet of the scientific method. At the moment there is a lot of data that has been collected on lipids that is misinterpreted, and a dearth of insights on connecting the dots on what those data mean for human health. The lipids we synthesize and ingest have a profound impact on our immunity, metabolism, microbiome and brain function that we are only beginning to understand. Better understanding will unlock greater human thriving and prevent costly mistakes or misinterpretations which are currently rife in the field of lipid biology in my opinion.
Why me?
As a PhD scientist myself studying the intersection between inflammatory disease, immunity, the microbiome and lipids for the past 15+ years, I have both personal and professional experience with this. I’ve authored 40+ peer reviewed articles in the field in this time. Aside from my research, I’ve learned this the hard way in my own personal health journey since being diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis. This diagnosis turned out to be a blessing in disguise resulting in a transformation of my own health, and that has translated into many different areas of self improvement. This includes years of learning and experimenting with the critically important role dietary lipids play to human health. My intention here is write and share information, stories, analysis and ideas to help people learn and share new discoveries or ideas as they come.

Name, explained
Homo op(t)imus is a nod to opimus (Latin for “fat”) and optimus (“best”). Every cell in our body is made of fat and understanding fat is central to optimal health.
Stay tuned for more!
And remember that it’s not just your genes but it’s also your lipid profile which can be passed through generations in many ways with the everyday decisions we make. Every choice you make daily can and will affect future generations.
Follow me on and let’s have some fun learning about fat.

> Nothing worthwhile comes for free. There are no such things easy fixes or health hacks. There are no shortcuts or easy solutions.
Antibiotics vs. the black death? Spectacles for short sight? Vaccines for smallpox? Surgery for appendicitis? Aspirins for headaches?
Once you actually understand, it's usually dead easy. And sometimes it's easy even if you don't understand. Persons advocating hard struggles are to be treated with suspicion. Only through the reliable performance of miracles can we know the wise.
